Raku Reds

November 08, 2025

I really enjoy making raku pottery, but since it’s not safe to use to hold food or drink and isn’t watertight, I decided to make some planters. If the clay holds onto some moisture when I water the plants, the plants will just be happy about it so it’s a win win.  Red raku glazes have copper in them, so they will react with moisture in the air and turn dull and green unless they are sealed with a spray sealer.  I didn’t think that was a good idea for my plants though, so I just let the pots be as they are.  Since I’m not selling them, I can always refire them to make them red and shiny again—and since it’s pottery, they will like be a bit different than the originals after a second firing.  That’s the mystery of pottery.
