Something’s Fishy

November 03, 2025

Underglazes are pretty good at staying true to color at cone 5, but this process photo shows how the two blues darkened in the glaze firing since the greenware and the bisque matched in color.  It could be the underglaze itself or it could be the clear affecting it.  Test tiles can work wonders for getting some control over the process, and there is still a lot of joy in first opening the kiln even if you have a good idea of how it will turn out!  I made a few of these fish with a hole in them so they can be hung as wall art—fun!
